Amazon introduces new generative AI tools for sellers

Amazon recently introduced a new set of generative AI tools for sellers, which the retailer says will simplify the process of creating product listings. The retail giant claims that these new features are designed to help sellers generate "captivating product descriptions, titles and listing details".

Enhance existing product descriptions

Sellers will also be able to add to their existing product descriptions using AI, instead of having to start from scratch.

Tools based on linguistic models

The AI tools were developed using large language models (LLMs) that were trained on large amounts of data. Although Amazon doesn't specifically say so, it seems that the retailer probably looked at its own list data to train its machine learning models. Previously, Amazon used machine learning and deep learning techniques to extract and enrich product information, but the new generative AI capabilities build on this technology.

Infer and enrich product knowledge

"With our new generative AI models, we can infer, enhance and enrich product knowledge on an unprecedented scale and with dramatic improvements in quality, performance and efficiency," explains Robert Tekiela, Amazon's vice president of catalog selection and systems, in a statement. "Our models learn to infer product information from different sources of information, latent knowledge and logical reasoning they acquire. For example, they can infer that the table is round if the specifications indicate a diameter, or infer the collar style of a shirt from its image."

The benefits and concerns of using generative AI

Amazon claims that its generative AI tools will help sellers save time and enable customers to find more complete product information. However, there are concerns about using generative AI models on such a large scale, given their ability to "hallucinate" - that is, create false information not based on real data.

The tools could also potentially contain other errors that would go undetected if a human being didn't check the result. And if the tools end up creating incorrect product listings and descriptions, Amazon could be held liable - especially if it doesn't specify that the listing was created using AI.

Generative AI tools at Amazon and eBay

The Information had previously reported that Amazon was testing generative AI tools for content, noting that the tool would alert sellers to check content to ensure it complied with Amazon's listing guidelines. The company had declined to answer questions about the LLMs it was using for the new tool, according to the report.

Amazon is not the only retailer to turn to generative AI to ease the process of creating product sheets. eBay last week announced the launch of a generative AI tool capable of generating product sheets from photos. Earlier this summer, Shopify announced its own ChatGPT-like assistant for its e-commerce merchants, designed to understand and interpret questions or instructions related to business decision-making, and create content such as blog posts, campaign ideas and customer emails, among other things.
