ChatGPT: OpenAI's text-based AI chatbot
ChatGPT, OpenAI's text-based AI chatbot, has taken the world by storm. What started out as a tool to boost productivity by writing essays and code with short texts, has become a giant used by over 92 % of Fortune 500 companies for more diverse needs. This growth has propelled OpenAI itself into the ranks of the most talked-about companies of recent times, even if the dismissal and swift return of CEO and co-founder Sam Altman has raised concerns about its direction and opened the door to competitors.
What does this mean for OpenAI, ChatGPT and its other ambitions?
The consequences are still emerging, but it could strengthen competitors like Meta and its LLaMA family of language models, or help other AI start-ups attract attention and funding as the industry watches OpenAI implode and rebuild.
Another facet of ChatGPT: AI tools that won't disappear anytime soon
Although there's a more... nefarious side to ChatGPT, it's clear that AI tools aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Since its initial launch nearly a year ago, ChatGPT has over 100 million weekly active users, and OpenAI is investing heavily in the field.

Sam Altman returns as CEO
Sam Altman's return was swift, with a "tentative agreement" announced between him and OpenAI's board of directors that reinstates him as CEO and restructures the board to include new members, including former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers. The biggest change for ChatGPT is that board members who focus more on the non-profit side of OpenAI, with the most concerns about the commercialization of its tools, have been removed.
ChatGPT Voice is available to all free users
Although OpenAI's management is unstable, the company continues to release updates for ChatGPT. First announced in September and available to paying users on a staggered basis, the text-to-speech model can create a voice from text and a few seconds of speech samples. OpenAI collaborated with dubbing actors to create the five voice options, and you can try it out by going to the settings of your ChatGPT mobile apps and clicking on the headphones icon.

Sam Altman could come back, but it's complicated
The only constant at OpenAI these days is change, and in a series of interviews, Nadella temporized on earlier reports that Altman and Brockman were headed for Microsoft.
"Obviously, we want Sam and Greg to have a great home if they don't stay at OpenAI," Nadella said in an interview with CNBC, adding that he was "open" to them moving to Microsoft or back to OpenAI if the board and employees support the move.

A number of OpenAI investors and employees tried to bring Altman back after his sudden dismissal by the company's board, but after a weekend of negotiations, it was confirmed that Altman would not be returning to OpenAI and that new management would be taking over the reins. What this means for the future of ChatGPT and for the OpenAI Dev Day announcements remains to be seen.

Sam Altman ousted as CEO of OpenAI
Sam Altman has been dismissed from OpenAI. He will step down from the company's board of directors and resign as CEO, with Mira Murati, OpenAI's CTO, taking on the role of interim CEO. In an OpenAI blog post, the company writes that the board "no longer has confidence in [Altman's] ability" to continue leading OpenAI.
In a tweet, Altman said that working at OpenAI "has been a transformative experience" for him and "hopefully for the world".
OpenAI explores how ChatGPT can be used in the classroom
OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap revealed at a conference in San Francisco that the company plans to create a team to identify ways AI and ChatGPT can be used in education.
