They fear the consequences of plagiarism and machine-generated essays, as well as the "hallucinations" - where the system confidently asserts something that is false simply because it doesn't know any better - of tools like ChatGPT and Bard. There's a palpable concern that generative AI will become a substitute for authentic learning: something that will help a person pass a test without needing to absorb and internalize the content.

While there's no doubt that AI has been used to bypass the learning process, ChatGPT has already taken on the role of impromptu personal tutor for millions, changing learning consumption habits and improving our relationship with education. The possibility of an AI-powered teaching assistant - one that mentors, encourages and guides learners in a one-to-one relationship - is within reach. And the scalability of AI means that anyone can benefit.

AI can make learning addictive, and for many, it already has. The reasons why this happens have little to do with cutting-edge advances in AI and computer science, and much more to do with the fundamentals of what makes a learner engaged, motivated and enthusiastic.

Growing up in Armenia, I was fascinated by the intensely competitive Math Olympiads, and my desire to win drove me to spend hours studying and practicing. Yet, as an adult, I failed to recapture this same motivation by studying mathematics at MIT. I've spent much of my life researching and understanding motivations for learning, some of which I've synthesized in this article and many of which led me to found CodeSignal.

What do we mean by "addictive"?

When I talk about AI making learning addictive, I'm talking about a sense of excitement and enthusiasm - instilling a voracious appetite for self-improvement and growth in the learner. But, more importantly, this continues long after the learner has achieved what initiated their journey. Basically, it boils down to sustained long-term motivation. Creating self-motivated learners is a challenge faced by most educators, and much educational research addresses this topic.

It's hard to overestimate the importance of motivation. Whether you're learning to speak a new language or taking your first steps towards a career in programming, learning is inherently iterative, where the learner gradually builds confidence and fluency over time. Prolific programming educator Zed Shaw once described it as "climbing a mountain of ignorance". The first few months - when you're not confident and don't yet understand the subject - are the hardest, and it's all too easy to give up. That's why you need an external force to encourage the learner to keep going. Confidence, skill and maybe even greatness are just around the corner.

[608

post-9354","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-actualite-intelligence-artificielle","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-50
["GET
