Was Marie Laure LeBlanc inspired by a real person?<\/h2>\n

Marie-Laure LeBlanc is not based on a real person, but on a character from American author Anthony Doerr's 2014 historical fiction novel of the same name. That's not to say that the elements of her story aren't real, as Doerr conducted a decade of research to bring the story to life.<\/p>\n

He got the idea for Marie-Laure LeBlanc's character from a meeting on a train. Although it was vague at the time, over the course of a year, Doerr knew he wanted to create a world in which a blind girl would read a story to a boy over the radio. The idea for the girl came to him in 2004, when Doerr observed a man on a train bound for Penn Station in New York, who was getting upset about a call disconnection in the subway. It got him thinking about how easy life is today, and how difficult it would have been for people to communicate in a time when things were much more difficult. He kept this idea of the blind girl in mind for a year, until he reached Saint-Malo on a tour of France. After exploring it, he knew he had to create a story around the place his countrymen had bombed.<\/p>\n

In the series, Marie-Laure is presented as a strong character who, despite her disability, can take care of herself. This is the result of Doerr's idea of trying to write a character who could still be more capable than the adults and people around her in such difficult times.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, even if Marie-Laure LeBlanc's character isn't based on a real person, there are too many historical references and inspirations that have made her what she is, that are hard to ignore and exciting to learn from.<\/p>\n
