Meanwhile, the buy now, pay later service Afterpay, acquired by Block in 2021 for $29 billion, posted significant losses. Block's Bitcoin revenues also declined in correspondence with the cryptocurrency's falling price last year. In addition, Square faces increasing competition from several rivals, including Fiserv's Clover, Toast and Stripe.<\/p>\n<p>Investors are unhappy. Square shares are down around 30% since the start of 2023, as Block founder Jack Dorsey prepares to take over the reins from former Square head Alyssa Henry.<\/p>\n<p>Square offers its shareholders generative AI.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Menu_Generator_une_fonctionnalite_dIA_generative_pour_les_restaurants\"><\/span>Menu Generator: generative AI functionality for restaurants<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One of the new AI-powered features, Menu Generator, allows restaurants to create a \"full menu\" on Square in \"just a few minutes\", the platform promises in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>\"This tool is particularly valuable for new restaurateurs who don't have a menu or aren't ready to upload one when they integrate,\" a Square spokesperson said via e-mail. \"With Menu Generator, restaurants can now create a complete menu on Square... with the ability to come back later to modify or update it after completing other configuration tasks. This gives them, and any business looking to diversify into food and beverage offerings, a valuable boost when launching their operations on Square.\"<\/p>\n<p>Given the tendency of generative AI to go off the rails, I'd remain cautious about using it to publish a menu, especially given that gross inaccuracies could expose restaurants to lawsuits for false advertising. However, Square insists that the process - which relies on various third-party generative AI models, including OpenAI's GPT-3, GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 - is not fully automated, and that customers have the opportunity to make changes before the menu is published on the web.<\/p>\n<p>\"All our AI-generated content is offered to salespeople as suggestions, giving them the option of saving it as is or modifying it further,\" said the spokesperson. \"The human review process is carried out by the sellers themselves, who approve or modify all copy created to ensure it helps them achieve their business goals.\"<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dautres_fonctionnalites_dIA_generative_pour_les_communications_et_les_descriptions_darticles\"><\/span>More generative AI features for communications and article descriptions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Human review is also built into Square's new generative email copy functionality, according to the spokesperson, which uses generative AI to create personalized messages for customers. This also applies to Square's new website copy generator, which writes headlines - or even entire articles - from a brief text instruction.<\/p>\n<p>I asked Square if steps had been taken to ensure that content generated by its website tool would not be penalized by search engines that don't like certain obvious types of AI-generated content. In response, the spokesperson referred to Square's partnerships and integrations with Google to \"help small businesses overcome visibility hurdles\" - without directly answering the question.<\/p>\n<p>As part of AI's new generative capabilities, Square's kitchen display system, a kiosk for restaurant order management, can now automatically assign menu items to categories and station screens. In addition, Square's job scheduling system can automatically import service names, descriptions, durations and prices during integration. Finally, Square's POS platform now offers item suggestions to sales staff \"based on their company information\" (which is not specified in the press release).<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Square Team Communication, which adds announcements and messages to the Square Team application for employee scheduling and time tracking, is now able to generate and send announcements to inform employees of new products and upcoming promotions. Square Messages, Square's customer-to-business messaging platform, can now suggest \"sophisticated\" AI responses, while allowing messages to be personalized with pre-filled responses containing the customer's name (enhancing Square's existing response generator, which the company says generates 450,000 messages a month).<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the press release, Saumil Mehta, Square's Head of POS, states that the new generative capabilities of AI place Square \"at the cutting edge of technology\".<\/p>\n<p>\"Square is ideally positioned to be the technology partner that enables the most fluid and intuitive applications of AI,\" says Mehta.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I'm not so sure.
