Founded in Russia around 2008, Library Genesis offers mainly scientific textbooks in the local language. After adding some 500,000 books, mainly in English, thanks to Library.nu, the 'Libgen' archive has been strengthened with content made available by Sci-Hub founder Alexandra Elbakyan.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Plainte_en_matiere_de_droits_dauteur_deposee_contre_Libgen_par_les_principaux_editeurs\"><\/span>Copyright complaint filed against Libgen by major publishers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A copyright complaint has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, stating that Libgen's collection of infringing works now numbers over six million files. At least 20,000 of these files were published by plaintiffs Cengage Learning, Inc. and Bedford, Freeman &amp; Worth Publishing Group, LLC (known as Macmillan Learning, McGraw Hill LLC and Pearson Education, Inc.) and distributed by Libgen without authorization.<\/p>\n<p>\"Each year, Plaintiffs publish tens of thousands of academic works, including higher education textbooks, which serve as the basis for thousands of courses at U.S. universities and colleges and are among the most popular and widely used titles in their fields,\" begins the publishers' complaint.<\/p>\n<p>\"Defendants operate one of the largest, most notorious and most extensive counterfeiting operations in the world. 'Library Genesis', or 'Libgen' for short, is a group of pirate websites through which a wide variety of written material is illegally copied and distributed online without any authorization and without compensation to the copyright holders.\"<\/p>\n<p>Defendants in this case include DOES 1 - 50 (known as Library Genesis), 'bookwarrior', and a list of domains owned or used by Libgen, including <em>cdn1.booksdl.org, jlibgen.tk, libgen.ee, libgen.fun, libgen.gs, libgen.is, libgen.lc, libgen.li, libgen.pm, libgen.rocks, libgen.rs, libgen.space, libgen.st, libgen.su, library.lol, and llhlf.com<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Libgen_est_renforce_pour_maintenir_une_%C2%AB_contrefacon_considerable_%C2%BB\"><\/span>Libgen is strengthened to maintain \"considerable counterfeiting\".<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The publishers' complaint highlights the many changing domain names through which Libgen can be accessed, and states that Libgen's operators have set up \"multiple redundancies\" to ensure that huge volumes of infringing content remain accessible.<\/p>\n<p>\"For example, users can download infringing files directly from Libgen or via interplanetary File Sharing gateways (\"IPFS\") that claim to facilitate faster, more secure downloads and are operated by U.S.-based companies,\" the complaint notes.<\/p>\n<p>\"Current IPFS gateway companies include Cloudflare, Protocol Labs (which operates IPFS.io) and Pinata, all of which are based in the USA.\"<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Libgen_est_accuse_de_causer_des_%C2%AB_dommages_financiers_et_creatifs_%C2%BB\"><\/span>Libgen accused of causing \"financial and creative damage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The complaint states that Libgen's activities \"cause serious financial and creative damage\" to the plaintiffs, while depriving authors of income from their creative works. By offering content for free, Libgen is apparently devaluing the textbook market and, according to the publishers, may even lead to certain works ceasing publication.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Les_defendeurs_et_les_emplacements_sont_inconnus\"><\/span>Defendants and locations unknown<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The publishers' complaint states that the identities of the people behind Libgen are currently unknown. Their locations are also unknown at this stage, but the publishers mention \"foreign locations\" as the most likely candidates.
