How to tell if an egg is good

The best way to tell if an egg is good is to place it in a bowl of water. If it sinks, it's fresh and ready to eat. If it floats, it's not fresh and shouldn't be eaten.

To check whether an egg is fresh, always use cold water. As an egg ages, the air cell it contains becomes larger. The older the egg, the more pronounced the air cell. In cold water, the egg will sink if it's fresh and the air cell is small. If the egg sinks but remains upright on its pointed end, it's still good to eat, but not as fresh as an egg that has sunk and lies flat on the bottom of the bowl. If the egg floats, the air cell has grown too large and the egg is no longer fresh.

You can also tell if an egg is bad by performing a flotation test. To do this, fill a bowl with water and gently immerse the egg in it. If the egg sinks to the bottom, it's fresh and safe to eat. If the egg remains upright at the bottom of the bowl, it's still good, but less fresh. If the egg floats to the top, it's bad and shouldn't be eaten.

The float test is a simple way of checking whether an egg is fresh without having to open it. This method is particularly useful if you're unsure of an egg's age, or if you want to test a large number of eggs at once.

To tell if an egg is good, place it in a bowl of water. If the egg sinks to the bottom, it is fresh. If the egg floats to the top, it is bad. If the egg leans to one side or the other, it is also bad.
